A STORY TO SHARE
The estate of Pomino dates from 1500, the year the castle of the same name was built, and from the beginning has been famous for the excellence of its location. In the documentation from the year 1716 when the Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici identified the four most highly prized territories of Tuscany for the production of wines - the notice is considered the precursor of the modern “DOC” (Denominazione di Origine Controllata, or Controlled Designation of Origin) - the territory of Pomino is listed alongside Chianti, Carmignano and Val d'Arno di Sopra. At the World's Fair of 1873 in Vienna the wines of Pomino won awards, and in 1878 took the gold medal at the World's Fair in Paris, the highest international recognition of its time.
THE TERROIR OF POMINO
The castle of Pomino is found in the Apennine mountains to the east of Florence set in a charming landscape of chestnut and fir trees. Its vineyards are placed at the highest altitudes in Tuscany, up to 737 metres, and enjoy a fresh and well-ventilated microclimate. Here, in 1855 grape varieties were introduced that were unusual at that time such as Chardonnay and Pinot Nero. After a century and a half, these varieties have found their ideal habitat and produce wines of extraordinary elegance, finesse and minerality. In 1983 the wines of Pomino were granted their own DOC, or controlled designation of origin.
WINES OF UNIQUE CHARACTER
Pomino Bianco: finesse and style, from the smallest and most acclaimed Tuscan DOC for white wines, exclusive “monopole” of Frescobaldi. Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco in their best expression, thanks to the elevated altitudes and great luminosity of the vineyards.
Pomino Benefizio Riserva: in 1973 the first Italian white wine fermented in barriques, an elegant and powerful mono-varietal Chardonnay from vineyards at the highest altitudes on the estate. Among the elite few 'Riserva' whites.
Pomino Pinot Nero: the only Pinot Nero DOC in Tuscany, from where it takes its strength and finesse. Today it is perfectly acclimatised as if it were a native variety of Pomino.
Pomino Vinsanto: one of the Tuscan legends of wine, famous the world over, here interpreted by Frecobaldi for the highest quality without compromise.
