President of the Compagnia de'Frescobaldi
Ferdinando Frescobaldi is President of Compagnia dè Frescobaldi s.p.a., the Frescobaldi family holding company that directs the group’s companies, and he serves as well as President of the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia s.r.l. wine estate.
He entered the family firm in 1964, and in consort with his brothers helped to convert the family agricultural operations from sharecropping to direct ownership, and to shift emphasis to viticulture and olive growing. He focused on improving promotion and distribution of the estate wines, particularly those of Castello di Nipozzano, in the Chianti Rùfina zone; of Castello di Pomino, in Pomino; and of the Tenuta di Castelgiocondo in Montalcino.
He has always been a strong defender of the important role of the Denominazione Origine Controllata (DOC) system in protecting and promoting Italy’s prestigious growing areas, while at the same time favouring the utilisation of the Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) category in order to create innovative wines such as the Supertuscans.
He has been a founder and supporter of numerous programmes aimed at developing and further strengthening the role of agriculture in Tuscany.
From 1980 through 2001 he served as President of the Consorzio per la Valorizzazione dei Vini Toscani.
From 1995 through 2007 he served as President of the Consorzio del Chianti Rùfina, encouraging further improvements in a local agriculture whose characteristics are ultra-high quality fruit and protection of the environment.
He also led the Federazione Nazionale dei Viticoltori e Produttori di Vino, from 1999 through 2005, and since 1990 he has been a Member of the Board of the Consorzio degli Olivicoltori della Toscana Centrale, which directs and protects the production of Laudemio, the world’s most highly-respected extravirgin olive oil.
He currently serves on the Board of the Consorzio del Chianti, as well as on the Boards of Tenute di Toscana s.r.l., of Tenute di Castelgiocondo and of Luce della Vite s.r.l.
Ferdinando Frescobaldi was born September 24, 1940, in Florence and is married to Rosaria Boni. He has three children, Piero, Livia, and Matteo. He enjoys tennis, skiing, and mountain hiking.
